Type Locality and Naming
The naming section in well No. 60-3 in the Hubei-Daqingshan Reconnaissance-Exploration area, Hulin County, Heilongjiang. This formation was named the Hulin Coal-bearing Group or Hulin Coal-bearing Formation by the No. 108 Party of the Heilongjiang Coal Geological Exploration Corp. in 1960 and renamed the Hulin Formation by the Compilation Team of the “Regional Stratigraphic Table of Heilongjiang” in 1979.

Lithology and Thickness
Lower part, mainly sandstone and pebbly sandstone with sandy shale, belonging to coarse clastic deposits mainly of fluvial facies; the middle and upper parts, mainly sandstone, sandy shale and tuff with several beds of lignite and oil shale. Only found in the wells; the thickness is 332~465m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The formation has an unconformable contact with the pre-Cenozoic strata.
Upper contact
The formation has a disconformable or conformable contact with the overlying Neogene Xialiangzi Fm.
Regional extent
It is distributed in the Hulin basin of the Xingkai Lake plain and at Pingyang Township of Jidong County.

Fossils
It contains the plants Alnus and Tilia and sporopollen.
Age
Depositional setting
It belongs to deposits mainly of lacustrine-swampy facies, accompanied by basalt of polyphase basic volcanic eruption facies.
